Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't you bring the Dave Matthews Band?

That would be awesome, wouldn’t it? As would the Foo Fighters, Modest Mouse and Britney Spears. Unfortunately, BDP can’t afford them, and to be honest, neither could you. A simple math equation?

$250,000+ (band) / 900 (capacity of great hall) = $275+ (ticket price)

Not to mention all the costs that go into running the show.

How do you decide who plays at Stout?

We have a board consisting of a Music Director, BDL Director, Comedy Director and Special Events Director (among other positions) who research, select and produce our awesome events. They take suggestions from BDP members, see who is playing around the area for good routing…and of course, they take input from students at Stout.

What big-names has BDP had in the past?

Atmosphere, The Bad Plus, Sufjan Stevens, Mason Jennings, comedian Daniel Tosh, Mat Kearney, Dave Coulier (Uncle Joey from Full House)…old school (before they were big names) Jimmy Kimmel, Carrot Top, Billy Joel and the Red Hot Chili Peppers!

What names has BDP had to pass up?

Linkin Park, Yellowcard, Alicia Keyes, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, 5 for Fighting, Jack Johnson, Dane Cook, Lewis Black and Tenacious D. These bands were passed up before they 'made it big'.

How much does the average show cost?

Our Blue Devil Lounge series range from $300-2500 for the band and about another $300-500 for production costs. Big shows are quite pricey. Lets say about more than three semesters of college at Stout. Movies cost between $400-900/film. Comedians range from $1500-$3000. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Where does BDP get the money to pay for events?

From your segregated fees, Stout student. Part of that fund goes for entertainment on campus. Think of it this way, "All your movie, band, and comedy tickets are partly, if not fully, paid for the day you start classes!" Take advantage of what you've paid for!

Who do I talk to if I have suggestions for a band/movie/comedian?

Check out our contact page or come to a meeting.

I play in a band. How can I play at Stout?

Check out our performers page.

If I become a member of BDP, what’s in it for me?

  • Get involved on campus!
  • Meet new people!
  • Looks great on a resume! (Seriously, ask us where previous members are working!)

Those are the basics. But wait there’s more: get involved in an organization where you have a chance to get a paid position in Marketing, Event Planning, Human Resources, Art and Design… get involved in an organization where you put on Rock Shows, Hit Movies, and special events- Backyard Bash, Homecoming. We get to meet the band, pick cool movies, design cool posters and a progressive website…and some of us get paid!

How do I get a job working for BDP?

Every November, BDP hires 10 positions! (Check out jobs page for job descriptions.) Quite honestly, your best bet is to become a member and check out what BDP does. However, you don't have to be a member to apply, or to get a job. Hiring information will be posted on our website early November. Check back with us then!

What's the best part about working for BDP?

Work = checking out new bands, movies and comedians, setting up big shows, meeting people/bands from all over. And the roar of fans during a sold-out show in the Great Hall!

I'm in an organization on campus and we need some support for an event. Can we plan an event together?

Absolutely! If you have an event that falls within the BDP mission (check out the general page), BDP can try and help with your event. Just contact our Special Events Director or General Email with this information:

  • Name of your organization.
  • Your contact information.
  • An idea of your event, how much you have to spend.
  • Date, time and location for the event.
  • (Room reservation would greatly help!)
  • The role BDP would play in your event.

How did you guys get to be so cool?

Sometimes we wonder ourselves, but really, we're cool because over 10,000 students came to our events each of the last few years. So really it is because of you.
